Position Summary

: This elective course on Afro-Indigenous, Black-Indigenous, and Black and Indigenous perspectives aims to deepen teacher candidates from all backgrounds with their understanding of the diverse and intersecting histories, identities, and knowledge systems that have long been marginalized in mainstream education. By centering the voices and lived experiences of Afro-Indigenous and Black-Indigenous peoples, the course challenges colonial narratives and fosters critical consciousness around race, Indigeneity, and systemic oppression. Teacher candidates will explore how these communities have historically and presently navigated issues of identity, resistance, and cultural survival, while also learning about the unique contributions they bring to education, community-building, and social justice movements.
