The new company is a result of merger between Ashanti Goldfields and AngloGold. Its operation is in Ghana called the Obuasi, Iduapriem and Bibiani mines, which together produced 680,000 ounces of attributable gold in 2005, at total cash cost of $339 per ounce. The Obuasi mine is located in the Ashanti region of Ghana. It is primarily an underground operation, although some surface mining still takes place. The company is looking at recruiting more from the Obuasi .Ashanti,Western Region,other communities as it has already employed about 1,167 locals out of, 1,870 current workers which will rise up to 2,500 or more in future.
